I am doing personalized copies of Everyone is Lying to You (the greatest #tradwife murder mystery of all time) when you order from Bluebird Bookshop. I promise I’ll make them hilarious. Today’s article is further proof that the #tradwife has gone mainstream and this book is more relevant than ever.
This week Hannah Neeleman, the founder and CEO of the brand Ballerina Farm appeared on the cover of Evie magazine, the MAGA-friendly lady magazine that claims to be an alternative to traditional media’s abject feminism. If we had any questions about the Neeleman family’s political leanings (I didn’t) then this answers them for us.
On the cover Hannah is posed seductively in a prairie field whilst milking a cow in a pristine linen dress.
You can’t actually make this up.
The article about Ballerina Farm is entitled The New American Dream, portraying said dream as a homesteading/homeschooling/Laura Ingalls Wilder fantasy that can only exist if you have an insane amount of generational wealth like Daniel Neeleman, the heir to the Jet Blue fortune.
I talk about all of this an more in this week’s episode of Under the Influence with
.
The magazine, which is cleverly designed to looks exactly like other recognizable women’s brands like Vogue and Elle, touts MAGA-friendly headlines like THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING SEXY: Why Society Needs Aspirational Beauty.
Much like the “aspirational” tradwife, homesteading and wellness influencers who couched conservative ideologies in beautiful Instagrams containing reclaimed barns, fluffy hens the magazine produces lifestyle and wellness content that looks innocuous on first glance and then BAM, spouts a bunch of pseudoscience about the dangers of birth control.
Women’s magazines have been a bastion of terrible messaging about bodies, diets and dating since the beginning of women’s magazines. But they’ve made progress in the past decade or so.
That progress is what is so offensive to the MAGAs and Evie’s audience.
They don’t want to hear about women taking agency over their lives or their bodies. They don’t want to hear that all kinds of bodies are healthy and beautiful.
But that’s not the most dangerous thing about Evie. We’re going to dive into this more in upcoming newsletters and podcasts, but the most dangerous part is its injection of far right values amidst innocuous lifestyle content…..something the #tradwife influencers have done incredibly effectively.
