This is a real picture of me in the real Blue Lagoon at sunrise (because sunrise happens at 11 am in Iceland and sunset is at 2!)
I adore looking at pictures of other people’s vacations when I’m sitting at my desk stuck in a writing rut, or staring at my phone bored of my own life.
I’m gonna do a proper Iceland itinerary when my brain isn’t such a wet noodle from the holidays, but right now, when our brains are all noodles I want to share just a little bit of the trip in case you feel like spacing out for a little while.
I’m usually a pretty intense traveler. This is something I know about myself. When I was the managing editor of Yahoo Travel I visited 30 countries in about two and a half years and each trip was nonstop. I had to go everywhere, doing everything and eat all the stuff.
I still do it now. I have a chronic case of travel fomo. But for this trip I dialed it down. My mantra was DO LESS.
The purpose of the trip was a weekend getaway with a girlfriend. In fact my friend Casey and I have never really done a trip away together so it felt like a fun milestone. Going into the new year I want to bring big community energy with me. More stuff with friends, less fucking phone.
I’ve been to Iceland before and I plan to come with the kids eventually when the bonus baby is no longer annoying to travel with so I didn’t need to do the Golden Circle on this trip or ride the Icelandic horses (even though I love them). We wanted to do things that we couldn’t do with kids. Or that we could do, but they would be 80% less enjoyable. So this trip was a lot of lazy strolling, museums, cozy restaurants and wine bars, bookstores, bookstores and bookstore bars and then shopping and trying things on, soaking in lagoons and laying in saunas. It was perfection.
