Today I am pulling the trigger on something I’ve wanted to do for awhile now. I woke up this morning and said, today is the fucking day. Today is the day we finally launch the Over the Influence book club. We have such a robust community here of bad ass women who love books and ideas that it would be a massive missed opportunity if we didn’t just do it. I kept procrastinating because I was worried about how much work would go into it, whether anyone would join, whether the world really needs another book club.
Then I finally had the realization that all that worrying was dumb. If you want to do something then do it. And see what happens and if it doesn’t work the world will not end.
So I’m launching the club today. Yay! Here’s how this is going down. The book club will be for paid subscribers only.
I’ll announce the book at the start of every month and open up a chat thread. Get in there and talk it up.
Around the end of each month we will have a Zoom to discuss the book and sometimes we might just get bonuses like author appearances, editor appearances and fun behind the scenes stuff.
So yay. Here goes nothing. We have a book club. We should name it. So put your suggestions in the comments.
And what kind of books will we be reading? Good ones. That’s the only requirement. Some might be new. Some might be old. There will be fiction and non-fiction.
You can also try to connect with people locally in the chat to meet in person. Maybe I’ll show up.
Our first book is THIS IS A LOVE STORY by Jessica Soffer. I just finished this book and it was such a delight.
The story is a poignant narrative that traces Abe and Jane's relationship through various stages of their life, from their early days as starry-eyed lovers to their later years. As Jane is dying, Abe recounts their life together, revealing both the known and unknown aspects of their journey.
It’s got elements of The Notebook and Nora Ephron’s NYC romances. It’s also a love letter to the city and to Central Park and a meditation on the ways we come together, and also the ways we can so easily fall apart.
I can’t wait to do this with you.
LFG.
This is a great idea! For future months, it would be awesome if you selected titles that have been on the market for a bit so we can check them out at the library.
I'm in! I still haven't read Lessons in Chemistry which I hear makes for a good book club book. Also Leslie Jamison’s memoir Splinters. And I wouldn't say no if you wanted to include my book Sexism & Sensibility. It's geared toward parents but many reviews are by women saying it was liberating and healing for them too. :) Loved the Sicilian inheritance, btw!
