By now I think the New Heights podcast episode of Travis and Jason Kelce interviewing Taylor Swift might be the most watched thing that has ever been put on the Internet. I don’t have stats to back this up, just the fact that everyone I know, Swifties, football fans, the Venn intersection of people who do not give a shit about either of these things, are all talking about it.
I for one have already watched the entire thing, most of it with my husband and my kids and I was rapt for more than a hour for so many reasons. Also to quote my son, “Jason is hilarious and Travis just seems real nice.”
I think part of the reason the Kelce brothers interview with Taylor melted the feed is that watching a successful woman be respected, celebrated, and treated as an equal by two successful men feels almost revolutionary right now. It shouldn’t, but in today’s reality when the Secretary of Defense is reposting a video of a pastor saying women shouldn’t be allowed to vote, it sort of is.
We are in an age where we get to define what is “masculine” and how it is modeled for the next generation of men. The right has been gung ho on defining masculinity as something that involves being hard, emotionless, abrasive, aggressive and dominating. If we want to choose what manhood looks like going forward we need to truly celebrate the things that we actually want to define it. I think the joy over this interview is a very good start.
What else is causing the collective fascination with a single podcast interview besides Taylor being the most influential person in culture right now? I’ll answer it below the pay wall with a bonus mini video of Nick Aster and I talking about it!
For this weekend only I am reintroducing a one year free gift of this substack when you buy a new copy of Everyone is Lying to You for you or a friend. Keep spreading the word and leaving all the good reviews. It helps so much and keeps this book going.
Here is the Amazon link. I know it is often the easiest one. This is a list of more purchasing options, but it is also available at a lot of indie bookstores. Keep the orders coming!!!
