You Have to Keep Showing Up

Hey all! Off we go. I am writing this while housing a burrito in a Mexican restaurant in Franklin, Indiana before getting ready for my pre-launch event for EVERYONE IS LYING TO YOU at the Historic Artcraft theatre in this adorable town hosting by the incredible Wild Geese Bookshop (pics to come).

When I landed this morning I made the impromptu decision to drive to the Kurt Vonnegut museum and library in downtown Indianapolis to take a breather, explore his letters, edit my new book AND do a Substack live with one of my favorite people, Kate McKean of Agents and Books (and the author of WRITE THROUGH IT).

We get into all of the crazy stuff about book publishing, with no filter at all. I talk about showing up even when you think you aren’t making a difference and building a writing career step by small step instead of one massive burst of success. (PS I think this is true in every facet of my life including being a mom and a wife. I get better bit by bit and slip by slip, not all at once). We also get into building this new book AND a community here on Substack for which I am eternally grateful to all of you. The live chat was loud and messy. Just like me.

Then I relaxed a little by strolling the library.

I devoured every single quote in the KV museum, especially: “Beware all enterprises that require new clothes.” I may paint this one my desk.

On the flight here I finished A Marriage at Sea and MAN I HAVE THOUGHTS. I will get into those with you later this week but I definitely think it is worth a read.

I am off to NYC tomorrow where I will be at The Strand. I would love, love to see you there and there are still some tickets left so tell all your NYC friends to come see me and
